Canoe Ireland Flatwater SUP Skills Award – 1-Day Training & Assessment This one-day course is designed to train and assess participants for the Canoe Ireland Flatwater Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Skills Award. It is ideal for paddlers looking to develop safe, confident, and competent paddling skills on sheltered flatwater. Course Overview: Participants will learn and demonstrate the following skills: Paddling Techniques Forward and reverse paddling Effective stopping techniques Turning while stationary: Forward sweep stroke Reverse sweep stroke Turning on the move: Sweep strokes Bow draw, cross bow draw Step-back pivot turn Draw strokes (simple draw & sculling draw) Bracing and balance techniques Board Handling & Trim Understanding and adjusting board trim for efficient paddling and turning Mounting and dismounting from both bank and water Step-back pivot turns Board control in a variety of flatwater scenarios Rescue & Safety Skills Self-rescue following a capsize in deep water: Righting the SUP board Water-based remount without assistance Rescuing an unconscious paddler and safely transporting them to the bank Flatwater rescue techniques Environmental Awareness Obtaining and interpreting relevant weather and tidal information for safe SUP paddling This course provides a comprehensive combination of training and assessment, ensuring that participants meet the required standards to be awarded the Canoe Ireland Flatwater SUP Skills Award.
