Before pushing into bigger water or signing up for advanced courses, a Whitewater Kayak Skills Assessment is your chance to get expert feedback, identify your strengths, and uncover the gaps in your technique—all in a supportive, no-pressure setting. This assessment is ideal for paddlers looking to progress safely, join guided trips, or simply benchmark you ability. Whether you're self-taught or have years of experience, a clear understanding of your current skill level is the key to paddling smarter and progressing faster. 🧭 What We'll Evaluate: Paddle strokes and boat control Eddy turns, ferrying, and break-outs Bracing and recovery techniques River reading and decision-making Self-rescue skills and comfort with capsising ✅ You’ll Receive: A personalised skill profile with actionable feedback Recommendations for next steps: training, river grades, or gear upgrades Supportive coaching to help sharpen your technique on the spot 📍 Location: To be confirmed 🕒 Duration: 4 hours 🛶 Bring: Your own gear (or request a rental), water, and your paddling mindset Paddle with clarity and confidence. Requirements for attendance: Be over 12 years of age Be a current member of Canoeing Ireland Be able to demonstrate techniques & strokes Strokes: Forward Paddle, Reverse Paddle Emergency Stop. Forward Sweep, Reverse Sweep, and a combination of Forward and Reverse Sweep. Draw Stroke Sculling Draw Hanging Draw Low Brace High Brace Sculling for Support Stern Rudder Bow Rudder Techniques: Entry and Exit Edging/leaning. Forward Ferry Gliding Reverse Ferry Gliding Breaking In Breaking Out Rescues & Techniques Capsize Drill Offensive & Defensive Swimming Assisted X Rescue and an X Rescue Eskimo Rescue Eskimo Roll Throw and receive a throw rope as a rescuer and a swimmer Theory: Knowledge of Safety Rules An understanding of Eddies, Standing Waves, Upstream & Downstream V’s, Stoppers, and Easy River Routes An understanding of river signals and commands. River Running Methods – leapfrog, herd and drive etc
